Compassion in Medicine with Dr. Emily Pinto Taylor

Episode Summary: In this episode, Sr. Brenda speaks with Dr. Emily, a physician whose passion for palliative care and hospice has shaped both her approach to medicine and the formation of future doctors. Together, they reflect on narrative medicine – the practice of listening deeply to patients’ stories where suffering, hope, and healing meet – and on the complexities of caring for those facing serious illness, particularly within underserved communities.
Through the lens of her doctoring, Sr. Brenda and Dr. Emily reflect on whether doing our best is enough and how discerning our true purpose unfolds as a lifelong journey of discovery. Grounded in faith, empathy, and human connection, this conversation invites listeners to consider medicine not only as a science, but as an act of love.

Emily Pinto Taylor, MD is an assistant professor in the divisions of general internal medicine and hospice and palliative medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Her clinical work spans both the inpatient medicine wards and the outpatient palliative oncology clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta’s public safety-net hospital.
Dr. Taylor is deeply committed to medical education and finds great joy in teaching. A strong advocate for narrative medicine, she uses writing as a tool to process complex suffering—both with resident teams and personally—and to mentor learners in the art of effective, compassionate communication.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Taylor is a marathon runner, chocolate chip cookie baker, person of faith, and avid reader. She is most grateful for the in-between moments shared with her three children and her husband, a middle school principal.
